DIGGING
DIGGING
Dogs that dig do not really have a problem, they are dogs that go on their instincts and do what dogs would do in the wild.
Dogs in the wild would dig for many reasons:
• For protection or if they have pups
• To find prey that tunnels underground to dens eg. badgers, moles and foxes.
• For storage
Some dogs just dig for the fun of it because the scents they uncover excite them, their sense of the smell is much stronger than ours. if digging becomes to a nuisance especially if it's in the middle of your prize lawn it's best to try to work out why he's digging. Try to keep him mentally challenged and physically busy take him for lots of walks. A very tired dog is far less likely to want to dig a hole!
Some dogs may be persuaded not to dig but you must be consistant, dont let the dog out once by himself or it could the one time he digs. Always say no to him when you see him dig but never scold him after the fact, he will know you are cross but not understand why, he will not remember what he did.
For some dogs will never stop them digging but you can try to manage it and control where the dog digs.
1. Provide him a fenced in area when you cant watch him all the time, somewhere when he cant do any damage.
2. Make a special digging place in your garden which can be fenced off if necessary.
3. Provide him with a sand pit.
Bury a few treats in the areas he is allowed to dig and this will occupy him, NEVER let your dog see you plant any flowers in the garden as they might just go and dig them up when you are not watching.
The word terrier actually comes from the french worde terre meaning earth - terriers are earth dogs! You may be lucky and not have a digger, if you do however we hope the above advice helps a lot and please remember that after the rain the smell of wet earth is a HUGE temptation!!
