And thereby hangs a tale!
Stourbridge artist John Edwards has resurrected an old Black Country tale by painting a Brierley Hill pub sign.
John's work of art is hanging on the "Dog and Lamp post" pub in 62. Dudley Road, Brierley Hill. ( Unfortunately, today in 2010 the sign no longer hangs there as it was taken down and replaced with a new sign during a renovation in late 90's/early 2000).
Before he painted the sign, john did a little research and found a humorous entry in the Brierley Hill Police station occurrence book, which told of a Sergeant Bannock who was on duty in Hill Street when he saw a lad walking a Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
Sergeant Bannock had reason to believe there was a illegal dog fighting contest taking place in the area so he approached the young lad and asked him " Weer bist yo a gooin' wi that wammal?"
At this point the dog seemed to take exception to the Sergeant's tone and made serious attempt to savage his nether regions! Sergeant Bannock sought refuge at the top of a lamp post where he remained until local residents called off the dog, later identified as Mick the Black Country Gnasher. And despite weighing over twenty stones, the officer reportedly made the top of the lamp post in one standing jump.
The pub's landlord. Tipton's Clive Vasey, has added further humorous interest for visitors to his establishment by featuring several stained glass windows depicting dogs making their usual use of lamp posts! (As of last renovation, the stained glass appears to be gone too)
Pictured here (above) is a reproduction of artist John Edwards' artwork for the pub sign.
