Re: Old pics - Old Blood
The Deutsche Dogge/Great Dane is a German breed created by crossing old Mastiffs/Bullenbeissers (German Bulldogs) with Greyhounds and Wolfhounds imported from the British Isles. The purpose of the cross was to create a dog ideally suited for boar hunting, earning it the name Boar Hound. The Great Dane gradually became Germany’s premiere big game hunting breed, taking over the Bullenbeisser which became more specialized as a working farm dog. Since the fifth century BC there is depictions of dogs that strongly resemble the Great Dane used as war dogs, guard dogs and hunting dogs. The Great Dane was an agile running Mastiff that had great courage and strength to bring down a wild boar, however due to show breeding and unrealistic standards set by the different Kennel Clubs the breed today is a lot larger, heavier and suffers from several health problems.
