SPORTS AND GYMNASTIC THAT YOU CAN DO WITH YOUR DOG
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a dog who wants to be around his owner all day. He loves to do things together. He hates it when his owner is angry with him and due to this it's very easy to train the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
Below you will find some sports/gymnastics you can do with your Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
AGILITY
Agility is a great sport for you and your SBT. It has got all things a Staffordshire Bull Terrier likes. Jumping, running and playing. It's a track with a lot of different obstacles the SBT has to jump over, go through, slalom etc. The owner as well has to contribute, because you have to guide your dog through the track.
CYCLING
Your Staffordshire Bull Terrier will love to run next to the bike. It's good for his endurance, but you have to start slowly with it.
Here are some tips:
1. Let the dog first get used to the wheel. So walk with the bike and the dog next to each other. The next step is to step on the bike with a low speed and increase it slowly. It is very important that you reward your dog when he's doing great.
2. Let the dog get used to longer distances. Start with 1 - 3 kilometress and increase the distance little by little.
3. Watch the tempo of your dog. Make sure he trots next to the bike without pulling. Don't let him run at full speed (gallop), because this will wear him out.
4. Beware of overheating your dog. Don't go out for a ride when it's too hot outside. After all you also wouldn't run a marathon when it's over 23 degrees Celsius.
5. Don't go for a ride every day. Let it be a challenge for him, so when he sees you taking the bike out he gets excited because he can go with you.
FLYBALL
Most Staffordshire bull terrier's like to play with a ball. So Flyball is a perfect sport for them. The dog has to run as fast as he can to a machine with a ball in it. He has to step on a beam and take the ball out and return to his owner again as fast as he can. Flyball can be very exciting for dogs. It can result in negative behaviour towards other dogs (i.e. ball envy), so it is very important that the dog listens to you. If your dog has a problem with other dogs then it's better to solve this first before you want to do flyball with him. Flyball can be done by dogs and owners of every age.
DOGFRISBEE
Dogfrisbee is a fantastic sport to keep your SBT in good condition and shape. To minimize injuries you have to be sure that before you start your dog has a good base condition. Dogfrisbee isn't only about the skills of the dog, but also his owner has to have a good ball competence. If the owner can't throw the ball in a right way, the dog isn't able to catch it properly.
DOGGYDANCE
You can start to dance with your SBT. You can teach him how to walk backwards, twist, high five, bend and jump through and over your arms and all this accompanied with the music you like.
